Which ashram did Mahatma Gandhi establish near Ahmedabad in 1917?

The story behind the answer

Mahatma Gandhi established Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad in 1917.

The ashram stood on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Gujarat. Gandhi moved there from the Kochrab Ashram, which he had founded in Ahmedabad in 1915. The new community became a residence, training center, and base for campaigns in India’s independence movement.

Residents were expected to practice discipline, communal labor, simplicity, and principles such as truth and nonviolence. The ashram also supported spinning, handcraft, education, sanitation, and efforts against social discrimination. It was not merely a private home; it functioned as an organized community connected to Gandhi’s political and ethical program.

Gandhi left Sabarmati in 1930 before the Salt March and vowed not to return until India had achieved independence. India became independent in 1947, but Gandhi never returned to live there. The site is now a museum and memorial known as Gandhi Ashram.
