Sandie Shaw won Eurovision 1967 for the United Kingdom with “Puppet on a String.”
The 1967 contest was held in Vienna, Austria, on 8 April. British singer Sandie Shaw performed “Puppet on a String,” written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. The United Kingdom won with 47 points, giving the country its first Eurovision victory.
Shaw performed barefoot, a detail that became closely associated with the staging. The song was an upbeat pop number and became a major commercial success in several countries. It also helped make Eurovision winners more visible beyond the contest broadcast itself.
“Puppet on a String” is sometimes confused with the United Kingdom’s 1969 winner, “Boom Bang-a-Bang,” performed by Lulu. Both songs were British entries from the 1960s, but Shaw’s victory came two years earlier, in 1967.
