Which artist illustrated the original editions of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books?

Pauline Baynes illustrated the original editions of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books.

Baynes created the maps, interior drawings, and cover-related artwork that became closely associated with The Chronicles of Narnia. Her black-and-white illustrations helped establish visual identities for characters such as Aslan, Lucy Pevensie, Mr. Tumnus, and Reepicheep.

Lewis recommended Baynes to his publisher after seeing her work. She had already illustrated books by J.R.R. Tolkien, including Farmer Giles of Ham and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. Her connection with Tolkien helped place her within the same wider literary network as Lewis.

Baynes was an illustrator, not the author or editor of the Narnia series. Later editions and adaptations have used different artwork, but Baynes’s illustrations remain the classic visual version for many readers.
