Which artist became the first to win Eurovision twice as a performer?
Answer
Johnny Logan
Answer
Johnny Logan
Johnny Logan became the first artist to win Eurovision twice as a performer.
The Australian-born Irish singer first won the contest for Ireland in 1980 with “What’s Another Year.” Seven years later, he returned to the competition and won again with “Hold Me Now,” making him the first performer to achieve two Eurovision victories.
Logan’s Eurovision record did not stop at his two performances. He wrote Ireland’s winning entry “Why Me?”, performed by Linda Martin, for the 1992 contest. He therefore became associated with three winning songs: two as singer and one as songwriter.
His 1980 win took place in The Hague, while his second victory came in Brussels in 1987. Ireland’s strong results during the 1990s helped establish the country as Eurovision’s most successful nation by total victories.
Loreen later became the second performer to win twice, after victories for Sweden in 2012 and 2023. That achievement is sometimes mistakenly described as unique, but Logan had already set the precedent decades earlier.
