Oatman, Arizona, is famous for its preserved Route 66 section and roaming burros.
The former mining town lies in the Black Mountains of western Arizona. Its historic main street follows an old Route 66 alignment, and descendants of burros released by miners are commonly seen around the town. Visitors often buy feed pellets and watch the animals near the shops.
The road through Oatman is also known as the Oatman Highway. Its steep, winding course reflects the difficult mountain crossing that travelers faced before newer highway alignments bypassed the town.
Kingman is a nearby major Route 66 city and a frequent source of confusion, but it is not the town associated with the famous free-roaming burros. Seligman and Williams are also well-known Arizona Route 66 communities, though their signature attractions differ.
