Which Argentinian won The Open Championship in 1967?
Answer
Roberto De Vicenzo
Answer
Roberto De Vicenzo
Roberto De Vicenzo won The Open Championship in 1967.
The 96th Open Championship was played from July 12–15 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. De Vicenzo, an Argentine, shot 278, finishing 10 under par and two strokes ahead of Jack Nicklaus. His final-round 70 secured the only Open Championship and the only major title of his career.
De Vicenzo led after 54 holes, with Gary Player two strokes behind and Nicklaus three back. He held his nerve in the final round while Nicklaus finished strongly with a 69, but could not close the gap. De Vicenzo was 44 years old at the time.
This victory is sometimes overshadowed by the scoring error at the 1968 Masters, when an incorrect scorecard cost him a playoff opportunity. That later episode did not change his 1967 Open result. The tournament also marked the last Open at Hoylake until 2006, a 39-year gap.
