Which architect designed the glass dome of the Reichstag building in Berlin?

The story behind the answer

Norman Foster designed the glass dome of Berlin’s Reichstag building. The dome was added during the building’s 1990s reconstruction, after Germany reunified and the Bundestag decided to return from Bonn to Berlin.

Foster’s design transformed the historic parliament building into a symbol of public access and democratic government. Visitors can walk up two curved ramps inside the dome and look down into the debating chamber below. A mirrored central cone reflects daylight into the chamber, while a movable sun shield helps reduce glare and solar heat.

The Reichstag itself is older than the dome. Architect Paul Wallot designed the original Neo-Renaissance building, completed in 1894. The new dome was finished in 1999, and the Bundestag formally began meeting there that year.

A common mix-up is the role of Gottfried Böhm, whose earlier glass-cupola concept influenced the project. However, the architect responsible for the completed Reichstag dome is Norman Foster.
