Scott won the architectural competition for the cathedral in 1903, when he was only 22. His original concept changed substantially during the long construction process, but the completed building retained his characteristic use of monumental scale, brick, stone, and a central tower. The cathedral is dedicated to Christ in Majesty.

The foundation stone was laid in 1904, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1924, even though major work continued afterward. Scott died in 1960, and his work was carried forward by his son, Richard Gilbert Scott. The final building was completed in 1978.

Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Britain by total area and has one of the world’s largest cathedral organs. It is sometimes confused with the city’s Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral, a separate modern building designed by Frederick Gibberd and opened in 1967.
