Which architect designed both Trellick Tower and Balfron Tower?
Answer
Ernő Goldfinger
Answer
Ernő Goldfinger
The architect who designed both Trellick Tower and Balfron Tower was Ernő Goldfinger.
Goldfinger was a Hungarian-born British architect and an important figure in postwar modernism. His high-rise housing projects used exposed concrete, separate service towers and carefully planned circulation systems—features that made both buildings prominent examples of British Brutalism.
Balfron Tower in Poplar, east London, was built between 1965 and 1967. Trellick Tower in North Kensington followed later and was completed in 1972. Trellick is often viewed as a development of ideas Goldfinger tested at Balfron, including the separation of lifts and services from the main residential block.
The towers are not identical, although they are frequently described as architectural siblings. Balfron Tower is Grade II* listed, while Trellick Tower is also Grade II* listed. Another common distraction is Le Corbusier: Goldfinger knew and was influenced by modernist principles associated with him, but Le Corbusier did not design either London tower.
