Donkey Kong 3 introduced Stanley, a gardener who battles Donkey Kong.
In Donkey Kong 3, Stanley protects his greenhouse from Donkey Kong and swarms of insects. Instead of climbing platforms to rescue a character, the player sprays insecticide upward to repel the ape and eliminate pests. Stanley's role as a gardener gives the game a different setting and weapon from the earlier Donkey Kong titles.
Nintendo released Donkey Kong 3 in arcades in 1983. The game was developed after Donkey Kong Jr. and is the third arcade entry in the Donkey Kong series. It is less commonly remembered than the first game, whose protagonist was originally called Jumpman, and the sequel, which placed players in control of Donkey Kong Jr.
Stanley later appeared in other Nintendo material, including a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He should not be confused with Mario, who is absent as the playable hero of Donkey Kong 3.
