Street Fighter II introduced the bonus-round car-smashing stage later associated with the Street Fighter series.
Capcom released Street Fighter II in arcades in 1991. Alongside its character battles, the game included bonus stages that rewarded players with points. In one famous stage, the fighter attacks a parked car until it is wrecked before the timer expires. This challenge became one of the series' most recognizable non-match activities.
The original Street Fighter from 1987 established the franchise, but it did not contain the later game's car-smashing bonus stage. Street Fighter II also popularized selectable fighters with distinct special moves, a structure that strongly influenced competitive fighting games. Later versions, including Champion Edition and Turbo, revised the roster and balance while retaining the familiar bonus-stage concept.
