A swan was part of the Gloria Vanderbilt jeans logo. The elegant bird appeared alongside Gloria Vanderbilt’s signature and became one of the most recognizable visual marks associated with her designer denim.
Vanderbilt entered the jeans business in the 1970s, when designer denim was becoming a major fashion phenomenon. In 1976, designer Mohan Murjani’s Murjani Corporation proposed a line that used Vanderbilt’s name and signature on the garment. The jeans also featured a swan emblem, helping distinguish them from ordinary mass-market denim.
The branding was unusually personal for its era. Instead of relying only on a company name, the jeans emphasized Vanderbilt’s identity as a celebrity, artist, socialite, and designer. Their close-fitting cut, distinctive labeling, and embroidered back-pocket signature helped turn designer jeans into a status symbol for a broad American market.
The logo is sometimes confused with a dove or another long-necked bird because it was stylized and often embroidered in small size. It was specifically a swan, a symbol that fit Vanderbilt’s polished, glamorous image. Jones Apparel Group later acquired the rights to the Gloria Vanderbilt jeans brand in 2002.
