Which ancient wonder was located in the sanctuary of Olympia rather than in a city?
Answer
The Statue of Zeus
Answer
The Statue of Zeus
The Statue of Zeus was the ancient wonder located in the sanctuary of Olympia rather than in a city.
Olympia was a major religious sanctuary in the western Peloponnese. It was not an ordinary urban settlement like Alexandria, Ephesus, or Rhodes. The sanctuary hosted the Olympic Games and contained temples, treasuries, athletic facilities, and monuments dedicated to Greek gods and heroes.
The Statue of Zeus stood inside the Temple of Zeus, the sanctuary’s principal building. Phidias created the seated figure in the fifth century BC, and ancient writers praised its immense scale and artistic quality. Its setting at Olympia was central to its significance: visitors encountered the statue as part of a sacred pilgrimage complex.
The Statue of Zeus is sometimes confused with the Colossus of Rhodes because both were monumental Greek images. The Colossus, however, stood at Rhodes, while the Statue of Zeus was housed at Olympia.
