The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder located in the city of Alexandria. Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it stood on the island of Pharos off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast and guided ships into the city’s harbor.

Construction began during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter and was completed under Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the third century BCE. Ancient writers described it as a tall, multi-level stone tower topped by a fire or reflective signal. Its exact height is uncertain, but it may have exceeded 100 metres.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse over several centuries, and its remaining stones were eventually reused in other construction. The word “pharos” became a term for lighthouse in several languages. Alexandria’s wonder was not the Library of Alexandria, which was a separate institution and was not one of the traditional Seven Wonders.
