The Great Pyramid of Giza was commissioned by Pharaoh Khufu during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty.

Khufu ruled Egypt during the 26th century BC. The pyramid was built on the Giza Plateau as his tomb, forming part of a large funerary complex that included temples, causeways and smaller pyramids.

It was originally faced with polished white Tura limestone, which made its surfaces bright and smooth. Most of that outer casing was later removed or fell away, leaving the stepped core visible today.

The Great Pyramid is the oldest of the three major pyramids at Giza and the only surviving ancient wonder. It is sometimes confused with the entire Giza pyramid complex, but the ancient wonder specifically refers to Khufu’s pyramid.
