Which ancient wonder was built by King Nebuchadnezzar II according to tradition?
Answer
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Answer
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were traditionally attributed to King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Nebuchadnezzar II ruled the Neo-Babylonian Empire from 605 to 562 BC and transformed Babylon into a major imperial capital. Later writers described the gardens as a spectacular series of raised terraces filled with plants and supplied with water.
The gardens’ historical status is debated. No surviving Babylonian inscription conclusively identifies them, and some ancient authors placed them in Babylon while others associated similar descriptions with the Assyrian capital Nineveh.
This uncertainty distinguishes the gardens from the Great Pyramid, which still survives and has extensive archaeological evidence. The traditional attribution to Nebuchadnezzar II remains the standard answer in accounts of the Seven Wonders, even though the monument’s exact location and appearance are unresolved.
