The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was the ancient wonder built as a seated image of Zeus.

The sculptor Phidias created the statue in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia in the fifth century BC. It showed the god seated on a throne, holding a sceptre and a small figure of Nike. Its core was made from a wooden framework covered with gold and ivory, a technique called chryselephantine sculpture.

Ancient descriptions place the statue at approximately 12 metres high. Its scale was designed to make Zeus appear capable of filling the temple, and visitors regarded it as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the Greek world.

The statue was later moved or destroyed after Christianity became dominant, but the exact circumstances remain uncertain. The Olympic Games at Olympia were held in Zeus’s sanctuary, linking the wonder to the religious origin of the Games rather than to a sports arena.
