Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and used a tower to guide ships?

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder that used a tall tower and a fire to guide ships into Alexandria’s harbour. It stood on the island of Pharos, off the coast of the Egyptian city, and was built during the reigns of Ptolemy I and Ptolemy II.

Construction probably began around 300 BC and was completed during the early third century BC. Ancient writers described the lighthouse as one of the tallest structures in the world, although its exact height is uncertain. Its upper section likely contained a fire or reflective mechanism visible from the sea.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly between the 10th and 14th centuries, and it eventually collapsed. Stones from the ruins were reused in later construction, including the foundations of the Citadel of Qaitbay. The word “pharos” became associated with lighthouses in several languages.
