Which ancient Indian calendar tradition influenced the timing of Songkran’s solar New Year?
Answer
The Hindu solar calendar
Answer
The Hindu solar calendar
The Hindu solar calendar influenced the timing of Songkran’s solar New Year.
Songkran is connected to the Sanskrit concept of saṃkrānti, meaning a change or movement, especially the sun’s movement from one zodiac sign into another. Its timing reflects an older South and Southeast Asian tradition of marking the solar New Year through astronomical transition.
This influence does not mean that Songkran is simply an Indian festival transplanted unchanged into Thailand. Thai communities developed their own rituals, language, religious practices, foods, and regional customs around the seasonal New Year.
Songkran’s timing is therefore different in origin from holidays based on the Chinese lunar calendar or Islamic lunar calendar. Thailand later adopted January 1 for its official civil New Year, but the solar and cultural significance of Songkran remained strong in April.
