Which American sloop-of-war captured HMS Frolic in 1812?

The story behind the answer

The American sloop-of-war that captured HMS Frolic in 1812 was USS Wasp.

Commanded by Master Commandant Jacob Jones, Wasp met Frolic on October 18, 1812, in the Atlantic near Bermuda. Frolic was escorting a merchant convoy when the two warships exchanged fire at close range. Wasp’s crew eventually boarded and captured the British vessel after a fierce, short engagement.

The victory was temporary. Both ships were badly damaged, and the British ship of the line HMS Poictiers soon arrived. Later that day, Poictiers recaptured Frolic and forced Wasp to surrender. This is why some summaries describe the action as both an American victory and a subsequent British recapture.

Wasp is sometimes confused with USS Peacock, another American sloop that fought successfully during the War of 1812. Peacock was a different ship; it later became the name assigned to Wasp after the British captured her and renamed her HMS Peacock.
