Which American fort in Ohio was successfully defended by George Croghan in 1813? Fort Stephenson was successfully defended by George Croghan in Ohio in 1813.
The Battle of Fort Stephenson took place on August 1–2, 1813, near present-day Fremont, Ohio. Major George Croghan commanded a small American garrison inside the fort, which stood near the Sandusky River and protected an important route in the Old Northwest.
British and Indigenous forces under General Henry Procter demanded the fort’s surrender, but Croghan refused. The attackers launched an assault, yet American defenders used the fort’s earthworks and a cannon nicknamed “Old Betsy” to repel them. The British and their allies suffered substantially heavier losses.
The victory raised Croghan’s reputation and discouraged further British attacks on American forts in the region. Fort Meigs was another important Ohio fort in the war, while Fort Detroit and Fort Dearborn were located elsewhere and associated with different campaigns.
