Which American-born writer became C.S. Lewis's wife in 1956?
Answer
Joy Davidman
Answer
Joy Davidman
Joy Davidman became C.S. Lewis's wife in 1956.
Helen Joy Davidman was an American poet and writer who moved to the United Kingdom after developing a close friendship with Lewis. They were legally married in a civil ceremony in 1956, initially so she could remain in Britain. Their relationship later became a Christian marriage in a church ceremony in 1957.
Davidman's illness and death from cancer in 1960 deeply affected Lewis. He explored grief, faith, anger, and love in A Grief Observed, published in 1961 under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk. Some accounts simplify their story by treating the 1956 civil marriage and the later church ceremony as a single event, but they were separate ceremonies.
