Which amateur golfer won all four of his era's major championships in a single year, 1930?

The story behind the answer

Bobby Jones was the amateur golfer who won all four major championships of his era in a single year, 1930.

Jones’s achievement became known as the Grand Slam, although the four tournaments were not the same four recognized as the modern professional majors. In 1930 he won the British Amateur, the Open Championship, the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Amateur. He completed the feat on 27 September by defeating Eugene Homans in the U.S. Amateur final at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

The sequence began with the British Amateur at St Andrews in May. Jones then won the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in June and the U.S. Open at Interlachen Country Club in July. His final victory made him the only golfer to win all four major championships available to him in one calendar year.

Jones was an amateur throughout his competitive peak and retired from championship golf at age 28, soon after the 1930 season. The modern Masters Tournament did not yet exist; it began in 1934 and later became one of today’s four professional majors.
