Which album won the 1965 Grammy Award for Album of the Year?
Answer
Getz/Gilberto
Answer
Getz/Gilberto
Getz/Gilberto won the 1965 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The album was a collaboration between American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist and singer João Gilberto.
Recorded in 1963, the album features Antônio Carlos Jobim’s compositions and arrangements, with Astrud Gilberto making her recording debut as a vocalist. Its most famous track, “The Girl from Ipanema,” became a worldwide hit and helped make bossa nova familiar to listeners far beyond Brazil.
The record won four Grammy Awards at the 1965 ceremony, including Album of the Year. “The Girl from Ipanema” also won Record of the Year, while Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz received recognition connected with the song and performance.
Getz/Gilberto is sometimes confused with Jazz Samba, Getz’s 1962 album with Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba helped introduce bossa nova to the United States, while Getz/Gilberto became the style’s most famous international jazz-pop breakthrough.
