Which African Great Lake lies along the borders of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda?

The story behind the answer

Lake Victoria is the African Great Lake that lies along the borders of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The lake is shared among three countries: Tanzania holds about 49 percent of its surface, Uganda about 45 percent, and Kenya about 6 percent. It is Africa’s largest lake by area and the world’s largest tropical lake, occupying a broad, relatively shallow basin in East Africa.

Lake Victoria was named by the explorer John Hanning Speke, who identified it in 1858 and associated it with Britain’s Queen Victoria. Henry Morton Stanley later circumnavigated the lake in 1875–76, helping confirm its connection to the Nile system. Its only outflow is the Victoria Nile near Jinja, Uganda.

The lake is often confused with Lake Tanganyika, another African Great Lake that borders Tanzania but also reaches Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Lake Victoria is especially important for transport, fisheries and freshwater biodiversity, although introduced Nile perch and other pressures have severely affected many native cichlid species.
