The Hamburglar first appeared in McDonald’s 1971 “McDonaldland” campaign as a thief of hamburgers.
The character was created for McDonaldland, a fictional setting populated by personified food and restaurant-themed figures. In his earliest version, the Hamburglar was a small, older-looking character with a black-and-white striped outfit and a speech pattern built around stealing hamburgers. Later redesigns made him look younger and more cartoon-like.
The Hamburglar’s role gave McDonald’s advertising a recurring comic conflict: he wanted hamburgers, while Ronald McDonald and the other characters tried to stop him. That simple storyline made the character easy for children to recognize across commercials, packaging, and promotional material.
He is often confused with Mayor McCheese, who was a civic leader in McDonaldland, or Grimace, who was portrayed as a friendly companion. The Hamburglar’s defining trait was his attempted hamburger theft.
