The award was presented at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards on 12 February 2017. “Hello,” the lead single from Adele's album 25, also won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, giving the song three victories that night. Adele additionally won Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for 25.
Released in October 2015, “Hello” marked Adele's return after the huge success of 21. The song was written by Adele and Greg Kurstin, who also produced it. Its dramatic vocal, piano-led arrangement, and lyrics about reaching out to someone from the past helped make it an international phenomenon.
Record of the Year honors the overall recorded performance and production, while Song of the Year recognizes songwriting. That distinction explains why “Hello” won both categories. The song is sometimes confused with Adele's earlier Grammy-winning singles, including “Rolling in the Deep,” which won Record of the Year in 2012.
