Ada is the only sister of Tommy, Arthur, John and Finn Shelby. At the beginning of the series, she is the sibling least involved in the Peaky Blinders’ criminal business. Her relationship with communist Freddie Thorne nevertheless draws her into the family’s political and personal conflicts.

After Freddie’s death, Ada becomes increasingly important to Shelby Company Limited. By the third series, she is helping lead the company’s legal operations in the United States, giving her a role that contrasts with Tommy’s criminal enterprises in Birmingham. She is also the mother of Karl Thorne and later Elizabeth “Betty” Younger.

Rundle’s Ada is sometimes confused with other prominent women in the series, including Helen McCrory’s Polly Gray and Kate Phillips’s Linda Shelby. Rundle remained associated with the role throughout the programme’s original run, from its 2013 premiere through the sixth series.
