Which actor won the Best Actor Oscar for playing Anthony in the 2020 film The Father?

Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor Oscar for playing Anthony in the 2020 film The Father.

Directed by Florian Zeller, The Father follows an aging man experiencing memory loss as his perception of home, family and time becomes increasingly uncertain. Hopkins plays the central character, whose first name is also Anthony, while Olivia Colman portrays his daughter Anne.

The film was adapted from Zeller’s 2012 French-language stage play Le Père. Its fragmented structure places viewers inside Anthony’s confusion, making changes in rooms, relationships and chronology part of the storytelling rather than simple continuity errors.

At the 93rd Academy Awards, Hopkins won Best Actor, becoming the oldest winner in that category at age 83. The film also won Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins’s Oscar was sometimes confused with his earlier win for The Silence of the Lambs, but The Father brought him his second victory.
