Portugal celebrates Father’s Day, known as Dia do Pai, on the fixed date of March 19.
March 19 is the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is traditionally regarded in Christianity as the earthly father of Jesus. Portugal’s Father’s Day therefore follows a calendar date connected with the religious feast rather than a movable Sunday in June.
Families may mark the day with cards, gifts, shared meals, and visits with fathers or grandfathers. The Portuguese name Dia do Pai literally means “Father’s Day,” making it distinct from the English-language names used in countries that follow the June tradition.
March 19 is also Father’s Day in Italy, where the celebration is called La Festa del Papà. Spain likewise uses March 19 as Día del Padre, although national customs and the degree of religious association can vary between countries.
