Which actor voices the title character in the 2011 film Puss in Boots?

The story behind the answer

Antonio Banderas voices the title character in the 2011 film Puss in Boots.

Banderas had already voiced Puss in Boots in Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After before the character received a solo feature. The 2011 film follows Puss on an adventure involving Jack, Jill, Humpty Alexander Dumpty, and the magical beans that lead toward a giant’s castle.

The performance builds on Puss’s established identity as a sword-fighting, Spanish-accented cat. Banderas’s delivery helped distinguish Puss from the other talking animals in the Shrek universe and supported the character’s transition from comic supporting player to action-comedy protagonist.

The film was directed by Chris Miller, who had previously directed Shrek the Third. Salma Hayek voices Kitty Softpaws, while Zach Galifianakis voices Humpty Alexander Dumpty. Puss later returned in the 2022 sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, again voiced by Banderas.
