Which actor reprises the role of Maui in the 2026 live-action Moana?
Answer
Dwayne Johnson
Answer
Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson reprises the role of Maui in the 2026 live-action Moana.
Johnson first voiced Maui, the boastful shapeshifting demigod, in Disney’s animated Moana (2016). He returned for the animated sequel, Moana 2, and then brought the character into the live-action adaptation. His involvement extends beyond acting: he also produced the 2026 film alongside Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Beau Flynn and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Maui is central to the story because Moana must persuade him to help restore the heart of Te Fiti and save her island community. The live-action movie pairs Johnson with Catherine Lagaʻaia, who makes her feature-film debut as Moana. Viewers sometimes confuse Johnson’s role with the actors playing Moana’s family: John Tui portrays Chief Tui, Frankie Adams plays Sina, and Rena Owen plays Gramma Tala. Johnson’s return is also distinct from Auliʻi Cravalho’s involvement; Cravalho voiced the animated Moana and served as an executive producer on the remake.
