What kind of Disney film is Moana 2026 described as?

Moana (2026) is described as a musical adventure film.

The description reflects the movie’s two defining ingredients: a voyage built around danger, discovery and mythology, and a story told partly through songs. It is Disney’s live-action reimagining of the 2016 animated film, following Moana as she travels beyond Motunui’s reef with the demigod Maui.

“Musical adventure” is more precise here than the distractors. The film is not science fiction, since its world is based on Polynesian-inspired mythology and oceanic fantasy rather than futuristic technology. It is not a political thriller or a sports comedy either; its central conflict involves restoring the heart of Te Fiti and saving Moana’s island community.

The original Moana was also strongly identified with its music, including songs such as “How Far I’ll Go,” “You’re Welcome” and “We Know the Way.” The live-action adaptation carries that musical identity into a new production featuring Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui.
