Which actor provided the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Benedict Cumberbatch provided the voice of Smaug in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit film trilogy. He also supplied the dragon’s performance-capture movements, helping shape Smaug’s expressive physical performance.

Cumberbatch played Smaug in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. In the first film, Smaug is mostly withheld from view until the closing moments, while the second film expands his role into a major verbal and visual confrontation with Bilbo Baggins.

The filmmakers used performance capture to record Cumberbatch’s movements and expressions. He famously performed some of Smaug’s movement on all fours, and those performances influenced the dragon’s final wyvern-like design. Weta Digital then combined the captured material with key-frame animation and digital effects.

Viewers sometimes confuse Cumberbatch’s role with the actors playing other famous Tolkien characters: Hugo Weaving played Elrond, Ian McKellen played Gandalf, and James Earl Jones voiced Darth Vader. In Tolkien’s original novel, Smaug is the intelligent, greedy dragon who occupies the Lonely Mountain and guards the dwarves’ stolen treasure.
