Which actor portrayed the Witch-king of Angmar in The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Lawrence Makoare portrayed the Witch-king of Angmar in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

The Witch-king is the most powerful of the nine Nazgûl, or Ringwraiths, who serve Sauron. In The Return of the King, he leads the assault on Minas Tirith and confronts Gandalf at the city’s gate before joining the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Makoare was a New Zealand actor and stunt performer who played several major antagonists in Peter Jackson’s films. He also portrayed Lurtz, the Uruk-hai leader who kills Boromir in The Fellowship of the Ring, and Gothmog, the Orc commander, in The Return of the King. These multiple roles can cause confusion about which actor played which villain.

The Witch-king’s voice was provided by Andy Serkis, who also played Gollum, but the physical performer in the costume was Makoare. In Tolkien’s story, the Witch-king is ultimately defeated when Merry wounds him with a Barrow-blade and Éowyn delivers the fatal blow.
