Which actor plays Marty McFly in "Back to the Future"?

The story behind the answer

Michael J. Fox plays Marty McFly in "Back to the Future."

Marty is a teenager from Hill Valley, California, who accidentally travels from 1985 to 1955 in a DeLorean time machine built by the eccentric scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd. In the past, Marty interferes with the first meeting of his parents and must repair the timeline before he erases his own future.

Fox became closely identified with the role through the original trilogy, released in 1985, 1989, and 1990. The first film was directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. Fox was initially unavailable because of his television work, so Eric Stoltz was cast and filmed scenes before Fox took over.

The other listed actors are also important to the movie: Crispin Glover plays George McFly, Lea Thompson plays Lorraine Baines McFly, and Christopher Lloyd plays Doc Brown. None of them plays Marty. Fox also provided Marty’s singing voice in parts of the franchise.
