In the 'Culture' series by Iain M. Banks, what is the name of the advanced civilization?

The story behind the answer

In Iain M. Banks’s Culture series, the advanced civilization is called the Culture.

The Culture is a fictional interstellar, post-scarcity society made up of humanoid beings, artificial intelligences, drones, and other sentient life forms. Its citizens generally have access to abundant resources without needing money or compulsory employment, because highly advanced technology and the superintelligent AIs known as Minds handle most production and administration.

The Culture is not a conventional empire or federation. It has no fixed borders in the usual sense and is spread across artificial habitats, enormous ships, and orbital structures rather than being centered on a single planet. Individual freedom, abundance, and peaceful coexistence are central ideals, although the stories repeatedly question how those ideals survive contact with less advanced or more oppressive civilizations.

Many protagonists encounter the Culture through Contact, its diplomatic arm, or Special Circumstances, the secretive organization that intervenes in other societies. The Culture’s name is therefore both its formal identity and a statement of its broad civilizational project.
