Which actor plays Jeff the Doorman?

The story behind the answer

Mike O’Malley plays Jeff the Doorman in The Good Place.

Jeff is an immortal afterlife being who guards the doorway between the afterlife and Earth. He first becomes important when Michael, Janet, and the humans need to move between realms, and his deadpan manner contrasts with the increasingly frantic behavior of the Soul Squad. Jeff is especially memorable for his deep affection for frogs, a small character detail that becomes a recurring joke and a warm part of his identity.

O’Malley appears as Jeff in several episodes, beginning in season three. The character is also credited simply as “The Doorman,” although the name Jeff is revealed within the series. He works in or near the Neutral Zone, where the doorways connect different parts of the afterlife.

The role is easy to mix up with other guest performers. Michael McKean plays Doug Forcett, Paul Scheer plays Chuck, and Stephen Merchant plays the accountant Neil. O’Malley’s Jeff returns in the series finale, “Whenever You’re Ready,” where his frog obsession receives a final affectionate payoff.
