Which actor plays Chidi Anagonye in The Good Place?

The story behind the answer

William Jackson Harper plays Chidi Anagonye in The Good Place. Chidi is a Senegalese-French professor of moral philosophy whose intense desire to make the correct ethical choice often leaves him unable to decide.

Chidi becomes one of the central residents of Michael's afterlife neighborhood and serves as Eleanor Shellstrop's moral teacher. His knowledge of ethics gives the series a way to explore philosophical ideas, but his indecisiveness also creates much of the show's comedy and emotional tension. Harper's performance balances Chidi's anxious intellect with his kindness and vulnerability.

Harper was not originally a household name when the series premiered. The role became his breakthrough television performance and earned him major critical recognition. Chidi's relationship with Eleanor is especially important to the story, although the character's connection to Tahani, Jason, Janet, and Michael also drives many of the show's turning points.
