BD Wong plays Captain Li Shang in the English-language version of Disney’s 1998 animated Mulan.
Li Shang is the army captain who trains the conscript soldiers and gradually recognizes Mulan’s courage and tactical ability. Wong supplies the character’s speaking voice, while Donny Osmond performs Shang’s singing voice in the English version.
Wong is an actor known for stage, television and film work. He won a Tony Award for the Broadway production of M. Butterfly and later became widely recognized for roles in projects including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Jurassic Park.
The 2020 live-action film does not simply reproduce this character in the same form. It introduces Commander Tung, played by Donnie Yen, as Mulan’s commanding officer. That change is one reason viewers can mistakenly identify Yen as the voice or actor associated with Shang in the animated film.
