Which actor played the Tenth Doctor?

The story behind the answer

David Tennant played the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. He took over the role from Christopher Eccleston and became the Doctor’s tenth televised incarnation in the modern series.

Tennant first appeared as the Doctor in the closing moments of the 2005 Christmas special, “The Christmas Invasion,” after the Ninth Doctor regenerated. His first full story established a more energetic and emotionally expressive Doctor, while retaining the character’s intelligence, compassion and willingness to confront powerful enemies.

He remained the lead actor through the programme’s second, third and fourth revived series, as well as several specials. Important stories from his era include “The Girl in the Fireplace,” “Blink,” “Silence in the Library,” “The Stolen Earth” and “The End of Time.” His companions included Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and Donna Noble.

Peter Capaldi and Matt Smith played later incarnations, while Christopher Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor immediately before Tennant. Tennant also returned for the programme’s 60th-anniversary specials in 2023, portraying a version of the Fourteenth Doctor.
