Karel Roden played Stepan’s father in Mr. Bean’s Holiday. Stepan is separated from his father after Mr. Bean accidentally disrupts the boy’s journey, leading to the central travel adventure of the film.
Roden is a Czech actor whose international screen work includes film and television roles outside the Mr. Bean franchise. In the movie, his character’s disappearance motivates the search and gives the comedy an emotional goal: Mr. Bean must help reunite the child with his parent.
The role is easy to confuse with other performers in the film. Willem Dafoe plays eccentric filmmaker Carson Clay, Emma de Caunes plays Sabine, and Max Baldry plays Stepan. Karel Roden’s character is important to the plot even though much of the movie focuses on Mr. Bean, Stepan, and Sabine.
The film uses the father-and-child separation to connect a sequence of visual gags into a continuous road story across France.
