Bill Paxton played Master Sergeant Farell in the 2014 science-fiction film "Edge of Tomorrow." Farell commands the inexperienced J-Squad, the unit that receives Major William Cage after he is demoted and sent into combat.
The film, directed by Doug Liman, stars Tom Cruise as Cage and Emily Blunt as Sergeant Rita Vrataski. Its story follows Cage after he becomes trapped in a time loop, reliving the same disastrous invasion repeatedly while learning how to fight the alien Mimics.
Paxton’s performance gives Farell a memorable combination of military bluster, suspicion and comic intensity. The character’s exaggerated confidence helps establish the chaotic atmosphere of the film’s opening battle. The movie was later marketed with the tagline "Live Die Repeat," which became so closely associated with it that some viewers mistakenly treat that phrase as the primary title.
Released in 2014, the film was adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill. Despite its large-scale action, it was also praised for its tightly constructed time-loop narrative and character development.
