Which actor played Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park?

The story behind the answer

Sam Neill played Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. Grant is a paleontologist whose expertise in dinosaur behavior and fossils becomes crucial when the newly opened park loses control of its cloned animals.

Neill’s casting followed consideration of several other actors, including Harrison Ford, William Hurt, Tim Robbins, Kurt Russell, and Richard Dreyfuss. Spielberg ultimately chose Neill, who brought a serious, grounded quality to the role. Paleontologist Jack Horner served as a scientific adviser and helped Neill understand Grant’s work and mannerisms.

The film changes Grant from the novel in several ways. The movie gives him a dislike of children, creating an emotional arc as he protects Hammond’s grandchildren, Lex and Tim. It also presents Ellie Sattler as his romantic partner, whereas she is Grant’s graduate student in the novel.

Neill returned as Grant in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion, making the character one of the franchise’s most enduring human leads.
