Which actor played Colonel Dietrich in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'?
Answer
Wolf Kahler
Wolf Kahler played Colonel Dietrich in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Dietrich is a senior Nazi officer overseeing the excavation at Tanis, Egypt, where the Nazis search for the Ark of the Covenant. Kahler’s performance presents him as a rigid military antagonist who clashes with René Belloq over the handling of the Ark and its religious significance.
Dietrich is among the Nazi officials killed when the Ark is opened during the film’s climax. The supernatural punishment sequence is one of Raiders of the Lost Ark’s most memorable scenes, using practical effects and visual effects to depict the deaths of the gathered Nazis.
Viewers can easily mix up the actors because the Indiana Jones films repeatedly feature German officers. Julian Glover played Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, while Michael Byrne played Colonel Ernst Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Kahler’s Dietrich belongs specifically to the 1981 original.
