Which actor played Captain Jean-Luc Picard?
Answer
Patrick Stewart
Answer
Patrick Stewart
Patrick Stewart played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Picard commands the USS Enterprise-D and later the Enterprise-E, becoming one of Star Trek’s most recognizable captains.
Stewart was an experienced British stage actor and a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company when he was cast in 1986. Producer Robert H. Justman recognized his distinctive voice and presence, even though creator Gene Roddenberry initially imagined a younger, hairier actor. Stewart ultimately made Picard’s calm authority, intellectual curiosity, and Shakespearean sensibility central to the series.
The role continued beyond the seven-season television series, with Stewart playing Picard in four TNG films, the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine premiere, and Star Trek: Picard. A common mix-up is confusing Picard with Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, or with Picard’s first officer William Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes.
