Wesley Crusher was part of Nova Squadron in the TNG episode “The First Duty.”
Nova Squadron was an elite Starfleet Academy flight team whose members included Wesley Crusher, Nicholas Locarno, Joshua Albert, Sito Jaxa, and Jean Hajar. In “The First Duty,” the squadron attempts the dangerous Kolvoord Starburst maneuver near Saturn’s moon Titan, despite the maneuver being prohibited.
The flight goes wrong, killing Joshua Albert and injuring Wesley. Under pressure from Locarno, the surviving cadets initially conceal what happened and claim the accident resulted from a different maneuver. Captain Jean-Luc Picard investigates and insists that Wesley confront the truth rather than protect the squadron’s reputation.
The episode is the 19th episode of TNG’s fifth season and aired in 1992. Its title refers to Picard’s central lesson: an officer’s first duty is to the truth. “Nova Squadron” is sometimes confused with Starfleet’s Red Squad, another elite cadet organization introduced in later Star Trek storytelling.
