Which Shakespearean play is performed by Data in the episode 'The Defector'?

The story behind the answer

Data performs a scene from William Shakespeare’s “Henry V” in “The Defector.” Captain Picard directs the rehearsal, which opens the episode before an urgent report about a Romulan vessel interrupts them.

The scene comes from Act IV, Scene I, in which King Henry disguises himself and walks among his soldiers before the Battle of Agincourt. Data performs the role of Michael Williams, a common soldier. Patrick Stewart also appears in the holodeck performance as Henry, under heavy prosthetic makeup.

This Shakespeare connection is especially fitting for Picard, since Stewart was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and was renowned for stage work. The sequence also reinforces the episode’s themes of duty, identity, courage, and the burdens carried by people in wartime.

“The Defector” was written by Ronald D. Moore and directed by Robert Scheerer. It aired January 1, 1990, during TNG’s third season. The episode then shifts from theatrical rehearsal to Admiral Jarok’s dangerous defection from the Romulan Star Empire.
