Which actor inspired Johnny Cage’s original Mortal Kombat concept?

The story behind the answer

Jean-Claude Van Damme inspired Johnny Cage’s original Mortal Kombat concept.

Before Mortal Kombat became its own franchise, Midway considered making a fighting game starring Belgian martial-arts film star Jean-Claude Van Damme. That proposed project did not happen, but the idea of a boastful movie martial artist was adapted into Johnny Cage. Cage therefore became an original Mortal Kombat character rather than a licensed version of Van Damme.

Johnny Cage’s visual presentation and personality reflect action-film conventions associated with Van Damme and other stars of the era. The character is an actor who enters the tournament to prove that his martial-arts abilities are genuine. His sunglasses, exaggerated confidence, and Hollywood jokes distinguish him from the series’ more supernatural fighters.

Cage’s signature moves include the Shadow Kick and Nut Punch, while his Fatalities often parody show-business bravado. The resemblance to Van Damme is an origin detail, not a statement that Van Damme portrayed Cage in the original game. Cage’s digitized appearance was performed by martial artist and actor Daniel Pesina.
