Clooney created Casamigos with businessman Rande Gerber and property developer Mike Meldman. The three partners initially developed the tequila for personal use and for friends, rather than beginning with a plan to build a global spirits company.

Casamigos was produced in partnership with a tequila distillery in Jalisco, Mexico. Its name combines the Spanish words casa, meaning “house,” and amigos, meaning “friends,” reflecting the brand’s original private, social purpose.

The company remained independent for several years before Diageo agreed to acquire Casamigos in 2017. The deal made Clooney’s tequila association especially prominent, but he was one of three co-founders, not the sole creator. Casamigos produces blanco, reposado, and añejo expressions.
